Update for Tuesday, March 31st

In Language we continue to work on writing using point of view.  Using the ideas from “The Day the Crayons Quit,” we discussed how each page was from the view point of a specific crayon. As a class, we have begun writing our own letter from a different colour crayon.  We had a lot of fun thinking of things that our crayon would want to say to us.

In Math, we have been discussing lines of symmetry.  The students have a good grasp on what a line of symmetry is and how to find them.  With paint, we each made a line of symmetry work of art.  Some turned out looking like butterflies, while others looked like monsters! We talked about what was the same on both the left and the right side and students did a great job explaining their thinking.

Religion – We continue our focus on Lent, and discussed how Palm Sunday is the start of Holy week.  We continue to review the stations of the cross.  Students have been given an Easter egg and each time we learn about a Station they put something in their egg as a way to remember that station (i.e. string for Station 1, a cross for Station 2, a band-aid for station three, a blue heart for Station 4, a helping hand for Station 5, a picture of Jesus for Station 6). We are also learning a new prayer song to use before lunch or at the end of the day.

For food in a world where many walk in hunger,

For faith in a world where many walk in fear,

For friends in a world where many walk alone,

We give you humble thanks, O Lord, Amen.

Ms Cybulski Malik’s (gradual) return to work! Finally!

Greetings parents and students,

I am so happy to write that my doctor has approved a gradual return to work for me, starting with 2 afternoons next week, with each week increasing my time in the classroom.  I am truly looking forward to seeing all my students again, and to once again be a part of their learning journey. In the meantime, Ms Johnson will continue to work with me to ensure your child’s faith and education continues to grow and blossom. Thank you for all your support during this time.

Sincerely,

Ms Cybulski Malik

Today’s update:

School Mass tomorrow! (Please note – “crazy hair day” has been POSTPONED)

In Religion, we looked at three stations today:
Station 1:  Jesus is condemned to death
Station 2:  Jesus Takes up His Cross
Station 3:  Jesus Falls the First time
For each station we had a little prayer asking Jesus to help us along the way.
In Dance, the boys and girls had another great practice during DanceFest rehearsal today.  They are learning the dance very well and are enthusiastic and energetic participants.  Great job!

Updates, and “No, David,” and “The Lorax” Links

Language – Students continued their focus on Point of View today, and read “No, Dano david bookvid” by David Shannon and talked about how that story was written from the point of view of David’s mom.  Students then got into partners and were given a page from the story and were asked to write from the point of view of David. Ask your child to share with you their ideas from today.

Math – We continued looking at the 2-D shapes, looking at how many sides and vertices various shapes have.  Students worked on an activity where they had to draw and identify the various 2-dimensional shapes. Check yesterday’s post for a link to “Splash Math” to review shapes in an on-line game (or download the app).the lorax

Science – We read “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss and began looking at pollution in the world and began to touch on how we can help the world. Many of you may have seen the most recent movie version of The Lorax – Have you seen the original one?! Here’s a link to it – it is only 25 minutes long, and might be worth a watch!

“Splash Math,” “The Day the Crayons Quit,” and “The Last Supper” Links

Language – We continue discussions and activities to identify and describe the difference between fiction and non-fiction texts. We have also started talking about voice in reading.  Today we read the story “Thecrayons pic Day the Crayons Quit” and talked about how it was written from the different perspectives of the crayons. View it again here on YouTube!

Math- Students are focused on 2-D shapes, looking at how many sides, vertices, and how to describe and name them. Here is a “Splash Math” game students can play at home to help review shapes! (Trsplash mathy both the grade 1 and grade 2 games.) You can play Splash Math on-line, or download it as an app.

Gym- We started working with Mrs. RG on the dance for DanceFest!  We went down to the gym with Mrs. Parr, Mrs. RG and Ms. Webster’s class to begin learning.  The boys and girls did an amazing job following directions, listening and watching.  Great work!

Religion – We continued discussions and activities focusing on Lent.  Today we talked about The Last Supper and will continue talking about The Stations of the Cross in the upcoming days. Here is an age-appropriate video depicting the Last Supper you may want to watch in the days leading up to Holy Thursday.

Wednesday/Thursday Updates

  • Language: We continued to work on procedural writing and looked at how to catch a leprechaun.  Students wrote out a first, next, then, last on how to build a trap to catch a leprechaun.  They had quite a bit of fun doing this.  They all wanted to then go out and build a trap!  We won’t have time to do this at school… but maybe at home…? 😉
  • Health: We continued to look at personal safety at home (riding a bike with a helmet and bell, never swimming alone, etc.).  Students are very knowledgeable about this topic!
  • Religion: We continue to talk about the parts of a mass / reading over what we need to say, what the priest says, etc.  We also are continuing to look at our good deeds.
  • Science/Math: Students reviewed how to read a thermometer, whether the temperature is rising or falling, and what we need to wear depending on what the thermometer says. Here is a fun experiment you could try at home!
